The difference between website hits and website visits31 / 1

This is a question we often get often by clients when they look at their website statistics. What’s the difference between visits to my site and hits? Wow, how come I’m getting 50,000 hits to my site per month?

Don’t ever take Hits as an accurate indication of traffic to a website, the Visits statistics are the most accurate indicator of traffic to your website and the ones you want to keep your eye on. One visit to your website represents one person visiting your site and viewing at least one page. They may only stay for 30 seconds, but it’s still a visit. Healthy statistics for a non-ecommerce small to medium business website are from 40 to 100 visits a day.

HITS on the other hand, represent a request for a piece of information by a visitors computer to the web server. For example, if a visitor lands on your home page which contains 10 images there will be a total of 11 hits calculated for this 1 visit. 10 hits for the images plus 1 hit for the page itself. The more elements you have on a page, the more hits created. So, don’t let your people baffle you with wonderful hits stats. Always look at the visits.
